Antibiotics kill bacteria. When you’re sick, they make you better by killing the bad bacteria.
The problem is, they kill the good bacteria as well. Healthy digestion requires the presence of friendly bacteria in your gut. When they get killed by antibiotics, the digestive process breaks down, and diarrhea is often the result.
If you’re doctor prescribed you antibiotics, DO NOT stop taking them. Do as the doctor orders.

1. Stay Hydrated
When you have diarrhea, your body is losing water. So you need to replace it with something.

Others recommend Seven Up or Sprite. This is just bad advice. They have no electrolytes, and are extremely high in sugar. In this case, plain old water is a much better alternative.
2. Drink Bone Broth
Yes, that’s broth made from bone marrow. It’s easily digestible, insanely nutritious, and actually quite delicious. Despite what you might be thinking if you’ve never tried it.
Ever wonder why mom gives you soup when you’re sick? Look at the ingredients in a can of Campbell’s soup. There’s nothing special in it. Most canned soups are quite unhealthy.
So where did soup get it’s reputation from? Back in the day, before commercial soup products, all soup was made from – you guessed it – bones!
Get some beef bones from the butcher, find a good recipe online, and make it yourself.
3. Disregard the BRAT Diet
For a long time, the BRAT Diet (Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) was the standard for relieving diarrhea.
The theory is to eat carbs rather than proteins, since carbs are easier to digest. And that gives your digestive system a chance to recover from the illness. Makes sense right?
Here’s the problem: rice and toast have no nutritional value.
Bananas and applesauce are good. But if you want some healthier starch alternatives to rice and toast, try these instead:
- cooked carrots
- sweet potatoes
When it’s Time to See a Doctor
Diarrhea is usually nothing serious. But sometimes…it can be.
If the diarrhea is accompanied by…
- a high fever
- blood in stool
- severe pain
or it lasts for more than a few days, it may be a symptom of something more serious. Try to use common sense. If you’re unsure in any way, play it safe. See your doctor.
