We love our bread. And we love our pizza, and we love our cookies.
And when this new cult of “caveman nut jobs” starts telling you that those foods are the source of all your problems, you get resentful. You get downright pissed. How dare they?
How dare anyone try to take those things away from you. I get it.
But here’s the truth: They’re right.
Relax, it’s not a bad thing. It’s actually the greatest thing ever. There are a few downsides there are pale in comparison to the mountain of upsides, most of which we’ve all come to assume were next to impossible.
You will gladly throw all those yummy treats in the garbage once you realize all the great things you will be trading them in for.
Need some examples? Here are 21 of them:
Starting with the one obvious thing that everyone wants most from a diet…
1. Get less fat…much less
As much as we’d like to pretend we’re not vain, or superficial, or we don’t care how we look, the truth is, we do.
We all want to be less fat (except of course those of us who have been on the Paleo Diet for a year or so and have completely run out of fat to lose.)
If you want to lose fat, don’t use Sensa, don’t use Hydroxycut, or any of those ridiculous energy pills. Just eat Paleo. You’ll lose fat just as fast (most likely faster), and the only side effects you will ever have to worry about will be the dozens of other positive ones on this list.
2. Get more muscle…but never too much
Have you ever known a friend who lost a bunch of weight, and yet somehow looked less healthy than when they were fat? I’ve seen that many times. It almost looks like they have cancer right?
The reason their weight loss didn’t make them look better, is because they didn’t build any muscle to replace the fat they lost.
All of a sudden, minus the fat, it’s readily apparent how little muscle they have on their frame and that makes them look sickly.
With the Paleo Diet, you don’t have to worry about that happening to you.
Even without any exercise, the muscle slowly but surely builds and builds until you eventually reach your ideal body composition.
After your weight loss has bottomed out because you have no more extra fat to loss, you will notice yourself gaining a pound or two per month. Don’t worry about it. It’s a good thing. It’s all muscle baby. 🙂
And for those women out there who are afraid of looking like body builders, don’t worry. As long as you give it the right fuel, your body is smart. It knows when enough is enough. So don’t ever worry about turning into a She-Hulk.
3. Get a nice butt…really nice
Squeeze your butt. Now. Do it. What do you feel? Any muscle at all, most of the “wheat eaters” out there don’t have much at all. And yet your butt is supposed to be the biggest strongest muscle you have.
After about 6 months to a year of eating Paleo, do you know where you will notice the most dramatic muscle gains?
Yup, your butt. At some point, it will become almost “unpinchable”. Seriously.
And let’s be honest, everyone wants a nice butt…especially the women out there.
4. Lose the acne, get beautiful skin
Acne is one of the quickest ways to destroy your self-confidence, and kill any attraction you once had from the opposite sex. Why is acne so unattractive? Maybe it’s nothing more than an external representation of our internal health.
When our bodies are unhealthy, it shows on our face.
Why is the Paleo Diet so great at clearing up your skin? I’m not sure exactly. The best guess currently is that it mostly has to do with our hormones. A healthy diet balances out your hormones, and that clears up your skin.
All I know for sure is this: I’ve had varying degrees back acne (as do almost all men) since I was a teenager. When I started the Paleo Diet, it was gone in less than a month. Haven’t seen it since, and I don’t expect to.
5. Reverse the hands of time
Not only does Paleo remove blemishes and even out skin tone, it actually seems to make your skin look younger as well.
Maybe it’s an improved skin elasticity, maybe you develop more of that youthful layer of baby fat under your skin. I don’t know.
Just don’t be surprised if you started getting carded again when buying alcohol. (Red wine only right? 🙂
Now that you know all the ways the Paleo Diet will make you healthier on the outside, let’s look at a few ways it makes you healthier on the inside…
6. Reverse your diabetes
Here’s diabetes for you in a nutshell:
- You eat too many carbs for years and years.
- You spike your blood sugar daily because of those carbs.
- Your pancreas releases insulin to bring down your blood sugar so you don’t drop dead.
- You spike your blood sugar too often and your pancreas gets tired. Suddenly it doesn’t work so well.
- You continue to spike your blood sugar, except that now, the insulin isn’t there to save you.
- Now you have diabetes.
The great news is that for the vast majority of people, diabetes is completely reversible. Just follow the Paleo Diet.
Your carb intake will drop dramatically, giving your pancreas a much needed rest. You won’t be spiking your blood sugar, so that should lessen your likelihood of dropping dead. And the good foods you eat will hopefully give your body the nutrients it needs to at least partially fix whatever damage you did to it in the past.
It’s the perfect plan.
7. Improve your cholesterol
High cholesterol is one of the most common health conditions among older Americans. My dad was one of them.
Originally he was prescribed statins by his doctor. Ever heard of this drug? According to many sources, statins are not only dangerous, their downright useless.
But our doctors prescribe them to us, so we take them.
Two months after starting the Paleo Diet, my father’s cholesterol numbers somehow magically returned to normal on their own.
And he no longer takes statins.
8. Improve your vision
Why do so many people wear glasses these days? Are our eyes so fundamentally flawed in design that 70 percent of adults require them just to live their lives?
What happened in caveman days when there were no glasses, and we relied on the acuteness of our vision every day to find food and avoid predators?
Most of us today would last a day back then.
Maybe it’s because we’re eating the wrong things. But could the Paleo Diet really improve vision?
I don’t know for sure, but here’s what happened to my father:
Several months after he started eating Paleo, he noticed that he was having problems with his glasses. He figured his vision had further deteriorated with age, like it usually does, so he went in to the doctor to get his prescription upgraded.
After the doctor examined him (twice), he wrote a prescription, and handed it off to the receptionist. After looking at my dad’s previous prescription, she had to double check it herself.
The prescription was downgraded. His eye sight had improved. And that’s why his glasses were giving him problems.
The receptionist told him that in all her years working there, she had never seen a single patient’s eye actually get better with age.
9. Laugh in cancer’s face
There is a lot of talk about whether or not the Paleo Diet can actually cure cancer. Even to die-hard Paleo fanatics, claiming that this diet can actually cure cancer feels like standing on very shaky ground.
Why? Because it sounds way to good…and way to simple to possibly be true.
With all the billions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of man hours that have been dedicated to cancer research in the past several decades, how could such a simple answer have been staring us in the face all this time?
I don’t know.
All I do know is…if someone I know gets cancer, and their doctor tells them that there is nothing more that can be done…I will argue that maybe he’s wrong.
10. Live forever
Okay maybe not forever, but barring any unfortunate accidents like your parachute failing to open, odds are if you eat this way for your entire life, you won’t feel like you missed out on any years by the end of it.
A common rebuttal to this theory is that cavemen lived much shorter lives than we do today. So what gives?
At first glance, it seems like a hole in the theory, but when you think about it, the answer to the question is obvious…
Being a caveman was dangerous. They got killed by predators, by rivals, by accidents. Every single daily event for them was life or death.
But in the safety of today’s modern world, we’re able to continue living with weak, fat, unhealthy bodies that would’ve had no chance of surviving in the days of hunter-gatherers.
11. Ditch the pills
It’s one of the most common medical complaints you hear from people as they age. The older they get, the longer the list of pills they have to take every day when they wake up in the morning.
We all hate prescription medication. We hate the way it makes us feel. We hate the cost. Most of all, we hate that we are dependent on them just to live something resembling a normal life.
We hate that a doctor has told us that our body is no longer capable of existing healthily on it’s own, and that we now require these pills to sustain us.
One of the most common testimonials you’ll hear from aging people who start the Paleo Diet is that slowly but surely, and with the consent of their doctor I might add, they are able to reduce and sometimes completely eliminate their dependance on prescription medication.
12. Save a fortune on future medical bills
Total up all the potential chronic health conditions you may or may not get in the later years of your life. Then total up the potential cost of medical treatment for all those conditions. Then consider the possibility that you may or may not have health insurance during those years.
Then consider how it might feel to watch your family go bankrupt as they watch you die a slow painful death.
Now take all of that pain and uncertainty and stuff it into that cinnamon roll that you eat for breakfast every morning. Doesn’t look so yummy anymore does it?
13. Get healthier pets
Just like us, our dogs and cats were designed as products of their evolution. And just like us also, they’ve been taken away from the environment that they were designed for.
And just like us, they’re overweight, malnourished, under exercised, and generally unhappy.
Maybe if we could feed them the same foods that their ancestors ate in the wild, they would become healthier and happier as well.
What did dogs and cats eat in the wild for thousands of years before we domesticated them? Meat, probably. Dried dog food from a factory – probably not.
14. Enjoy food more
They call it the Paleo “diet”, but once you’ve been on it for a few weeks it won’t feel anything like a diet at all. That’s because you’ll be eating way better meals than before when could have anything you wanted.
I like frozen pizza as much as the next guy, but put it next to a medium-rare steak topped with with grilled mushrooms and onions, and that pizza is going back in the freezer.
Take a log of the dinners you’ve eaten for the past few weeks. Then look up some recipes on a Paleo website. How does those foods stack up to what you’ve been eating?
15. Develop a passion for cooking
If there was one downside to the Paleo Diet, it would be that you pretty much have to cook the majority of your meals yourself. But what starts out as an inconvenience quickly turns into something else entirely.
Cooking will go from being an annoying chore, to your new-found passion. And the Food Network will be your new favorite channel on TV.
Not only does cooking become fun, you also get good it too! Just like with any skill, when you start to do it a lot, you develop some skills.
Meals you once made that seemed rather mediocre actually start to taste pretty damn incredible. And when your friends and family try these spectacular dishes, convincing them to give up grains as well becomes a hell of a lot easier.
16. Strengthen your bond with your partner
Relationships have a funny way of growing stale over time. You used to talk and share interests with your partner, but eventually you just fall into a habit of doing your own things and sleeping in the same bed at night.
One of the best way to break that cycle is to develop a new common interest, and even better – a common goal.
The Paleo Diet does exactly that. It breathes new life into stale relationships. All of a sudden, you and your spouse are cooking together, comparing recipes, comparing your progress, going to yoga and hikes together, hanging out with other Paleo couples.
17. Strengthen your physical relationship as well
Couples have a tendency to lose attraction for each other over time. Partially because they become accustomed to each other, but mostly because they keep getting fatter and uglier.
With the Paleo Diet, everything starts to move in the opposite direction.
- Soft gets hard.
- Flabby gets toned.
- Saggy gets perky.
And suddenly, you find that you’re more and more attracted to each other with each passing day. And in the times you’re intimate, you’ll enjoy it more often, for longer, and you’ll both be better at it.
18. Get smarter
If the right nutrition can build a healthier body, and your brain is part of your body, logic would suggest that the right nutrition would also build a healthier brain.
Since you use your brain for thinking, logic would also suggest that you would become smarter as a result.
Intellegence is a difficult thing to measure, so it can be tough to say whether or not this is true.
But since starting Paleo, I feel smarter, and I know many others who feel that way as well.
19. Get happier
More than anything else on this list, happiness is the one thing that we all humans strive for on a fundamental level.
And it seems like it’s also the one thing that we have completely failed at throughout all of recorded history.
Why is it that virtually every great artist you can think of was reportedly miserable?
Why is it that few if any of the people you know are truly fulfilled and happy in their current lives?
Here’s a thought: Maybe happiness is nothing more than the right combination of chemicals in our brain. It makes sense, seeing as drugs can seemingly induce a temporary sort of happiness.
Maybe all we need to achieve that right combination of chemicals is to eat the foods that evolution designed our bodies to run best on.
Here’s another thought: Maybe happiness is nothing more than an existence in the environment that we evolved to live best in.
Maybe if we can steer our day to day lives closer and closer towards these directions, then we will naturally become happier as a result.
20. Become more socially conscious
At some point you realize that the world would be a better place if we all ate clean natural organic foods from sustainable sources. Not long after that, you realize that there isn’t nearly enough food on this planet for that to be possible.
And then you realize how sad that is. Access to healthy food shouldn’t be something afforded only to the rich. But right now, it kind of is.
Then you start to take notice of all the other ways our planet is headed for destruction. After you get over that initial depression, you start to ask yourself, “what can I do to make things better?”
21. Learn to question common wisdom
For our entire lives we were taught that whole grains were good for us. Why? Because people that we looked up to and respected told us this. Our parents, our teachers, doctors, the gurus on daytime tv, everyone.
So we never questioned it.
Come to find out that they were all wrong, and they all formed that opinion in the exact same way we did. Because someone else told them so.
How can so many smart people be wrong about something so simple for so long? I don’t know, but it happens all the time.
My final question to you is…what else are we wrong about?
